BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Tuesday evening sent a legal notice to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who is also the President of Bangladesh Awami Leage.
Khaleda’s lawyer Barrister A M Mahbub Uddin Khokan sent this by post
and courier service alleging that the premier brought false claims against Khaleda Zia about her wealth abroad and defamed her.
The notice demanded unqualified apology for the “malicious, defamatory and tortuous” statements against Khaleda Zia within 30 days, otherwise warned of filing a defamation suit. The notice also demanded to publish the apology in the front page of all national dailies, electronic media, online newspapers and in social media outlets.
After sending the notice, Barrister Khokan said that Khaleda Zia does not have any shopping mall or any wealth abroad. Prime Minister’s statement is defamatory for Khaleda Zia.
Addressing the Prime Minister, the legal notice said, “On December 7 in 2017, in a media briefing at the Gonobhaban, you made some defamatory statements against Khaleda Zia which were broadcast in the electronic media and were published in all the daily newspapers, online newspapers and many social media outlets.”
It also said, “In the said briefing, you made some false and malicious statements against Khaleda Zia, stating that she owns a shopping mall in Saudi Arabia and has huge wealth there and that she is also involved in money laundering. You also made some false statements against her son.”
“The allegation made by the Prime Minister against Khaleda Zia and her son are concocted, motivated and malicious. That the allegations made by you are calculated to tarnish her reputation as the most popular leader of Bangladesh with impeccable and clean image. The said false, motivated and malicious statements are designed to lower her in the estimation of the people of Bangladesh and people abroad. Your false allegations against Begum Khaleda Zia and her family members are intended to bring her hatred, redicule and contempt,” also addressed to the Prime Minister.
