Former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia allocated lands for World Trade Centre in Chittagong and laid foundation stone for it during her two regimes of state power in phases, a joint statement of BNP Chittagong said in a statement issued to press on Friday.
This statement duly signed by former President of Chittagong Chamber and President of Ctg south district BNP Jafrul Islam Chowdhury, convenor of North district BNP Ln Aslam Chowdhury, former President of CCCI Sarwar Jamal Nizam, city BNP vice President Abu Sufian, Vice President Shamsul Alam, General secretary Shahdat Hossain, and south district BNP general secretary Md. Shahjahan Jewel .
The statement was told that during the tenure of BNP , the activities for establishment of WTC began and the then Commerce Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud chowdhury extended all out cooperation to the proposed project.
The leaders said in the statement that in 1994, former PM Khaleda Zia allocated vacant land owned by PWD in Agrabad allotted to Chittagong chamber following the prayer of the Ctg chamber for WTC at a cost of symbolic cost of Tk.1.00(one) only and later laid foundation stone of the WTC there by Begum Zia. After allotment of this specific land of PWD to CCCI , it was ascertained that the land that allotted are not sufficient for WTC. In the meantime, Awami League came to state power in 1996 . And hence , a delegation of CCCI meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 1998 and prayed for giving allotment of the adjoining Railway land beside proposed WTC. But the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina advised the Chamber officials to purchase the railway land with appropriate price . On that context , the activities for WTC temporarily suspended during AL regime .
The statement further told that after assuming state power in second time by BNP led alliance in 2001, BNP Govt again allotted this railway land free of cost in 2002 following the request of CCCI and the then commerce Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury .
After total survey of these two land spaces owned by PWD and Railway , it was again traced that a very small portion of land owned by PWD is also lying unalloted and subsequently these land also given to CCCI free of cost. During the last tenure of BNP led govt , Begum Khaleda Zia inaugurated the construction work of the long cherished WTC. The statement further said , following the utmost initiatives and cordial efforts of the former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia , the dream of WTC is fulfilled now.
