Awami League Publicity and Publication Affairs Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud on Sunday said BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia wants to mislead the people and get sympathy over her illness.
“If Khaleda Zia suffered from serious illness, she would have taken treatment in any hospital. But she wants to receive treatment only at United Hospital,” he told a discussion of Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote at Jatiya Press Club here.
Mahmud, also a spokesman of AL, said Khaleda was proposed to take treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Dhaka, but she did not agree.
“Khaleda Zia is staying in jail with her domestic help. Her personal physicians as well as government physicians are providing treatment. Besides, a nurse is also serving her round the clock,” he added.
About the BNP’s participation in the next parliamentary election, the AL spokesman said BNP is yet to decide whether they would take part in the polls or not.
“Some BNP leaders are stating that they would not join polls without Begum Zia. A few others are saying they would not allow anybody to score goals in empty field,” he added.
BNP cannot take any specific track due to lack of coordination among the party leadership, Mahmud said and urged the party to do politics by setting a goal. The AL leader said his party does not want to score goals in an empty field. “Please join the election and see how many goals we can score,” he urged BNP.
He said if BNP again wants to carry out subversive activities and killings in the name of movement, Awami League, along with the people, will resist it.
Former state minister for home Advocate Shamsul Haque Tuku, actress and former lawmaker Sarah Begum Kabari, Abahani Limited Director Sheikh Jahangir Alam and Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote General Secretary Arun Sarker Rana addressed the function, among others.
Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote Vice-President Ali Shikder chaired the function.
