The BNP-led 20-party alliance is firm to continue its ongoing blockade although BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia was thinking of opting for no-cooperation’ programme if there was no response from the government to her demand for inclusive election under caretaker government. She now wants a result from the blockade, said BNP insiders.
The party insiders also said that Khaleda Zia is optimistic of success of her movement and that is why she is ready to face any consequence and won’t leave the Gulshan office as part of her strategy to continue the movement.
Khaleda Zia is not taking cognizance of the threat of arrest. BNP leaders believe that the ongoing anti-government movement will get a momentum if the party chief is arrested. “The government is threatening to arrest Khaleda Zia. She is ready for that because that will add fresh fuel to the current movement” BNP Vice-Chairman Begum Selima Rahman told The New Nation on Friday.
About the blockade, the BNP leader, who has been staying with Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan office, said, “The BNP Chief has no plan to call off the blockade, nor thinking of alternative movement. She will continue the programme until the demand is met.” Meanwhile, Khaleda Zia has contacted Jamaat-e-Islami, the key ally of the BNP, and urged the party to apply its full force in the ongoing movement. The BNP chief has convinced the Jamaat-e-Islami and the party assured her that they would remain active with full force, sources said.
The sources further said that after contact of the BNP chief, the Jamaat-e-Islami has sent message to its leaders and workers to be active. The Jamaat-Shibirmen have become also active in Rangpur, Jhenaidha, Satkhira and other areas. Jamaat Dhaka city unit leader Ataur Rahman said, they have no second option than remaining active, as they are the worst sufferers.
