BSS, Dhaka :
Awami League Advisory Council Member Suranjit Sengupta on Friday said that BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia claimed Ziaur Rahman to be the first President of Bangladesh with an ulterior motive to divide the nation. “After 43 years of Independence the mother and son – one being in the country and the other residing in London – are claiming Ziaur Rahman to be the first President of Bangladesh which is very strange and ridiculous.”
The AL leader said this while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion titled ‘World record of National Anthem and Silence of Begum Khaleda Zia’ organized by Nouka Shomorthito Goushti at Khwaja Nizamuddin Auditorium at Segunbagicha in the city. “When the Bangalees were united to create a history by singing National Anthem at a time, then Begum Zia was trying to divide the nation by uttering such fictitious comments,” he added.
Bangabandhu Academy Secretary General Humayun Kabir Miji also spoke at the discussion with Shammobadi Dal leader Harun Chowdhury in the chair.
He posed a question as to how Ziaur Rahman was the first President saying, “For becoming a President, a sovereign land and Constitution are needed under which a President has to be elected but at that time nothing of this sort was in existence, when the Mujibnagar Government was formed on April 17, with Syed Nazrul Islam as acting President.”
Suranjit said Begum Zia has to seek forgiveness from young generation for her utter falsehood.
It was funny to honor her by an award as a freedom fighter, He added.
