BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is going to Narayanganj today (Tuesday) to console the family members of the seven persons, who were brutally killed after abduction on April 27.
She was scheduled to visit the district tomorrow (Wednesday), but a new date was fixed following a report that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had invited the family members of the victims in the Ganobhaban the same day. The decision came at a meeting between the Narayanganj BNP leaders and Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan office on Sunday night.
Meanwhile, the family members of the victims met the PM on Monday, a day before the visit of the BNP chief. Shahidul Islam, father-in-law of deceased panel mayor Nazrul Islam, earlier told reporters that the premier had invited them in the Prime Minister’s Office on Wednesday.
Accordingly, Khaleda Zia will visit the houses of slain Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam and senior lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarker.
She will talk to the family members of five other victims and console them, the Gulshan office sources said.
Earlier, BNP sought permission twice for holding a rally in Narayanganj during Khaleda Zia’s visit.
But the Narayanganj city Corporation did not accord permission on security ground.
Alternatively, the BNP on May 9 announced that its chief would visit the city to commiserate with the family members.
BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has on the other hand criticised the PM for inviting the family members of the victims for a meeting with her when Khaleda Zia programmed to visit the district.
The BNP leader alleged that the government was still trying to obstruct the programme of Khaleda Zia.
