Accusing the police of killing militant suspect Golam Faizullah alias Fahim in the name of a gunfight, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Thursday claimed that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is ‘involved’ in it.
Speaking at an iftar party, she urged pro-BNP lawyers to move the court to know why and how the militant suspect was killed in police custody. “Fahim was killed in a stage-managed plot in the name of a gunfight. He was killed handcuffed while on remand. It was not crossfire, but a murder by the police in custody. Killing by the police means Hasina (PM) has involvement in it as she is the Home Minister (sic),” Khaleda said.
Labour Party, one of the components of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, arranged the iftar party at Emmanuelle’s Banquet Hall in the city’s Gulshan area. Earlier on June 18, Fahim, who was on a 10-day remand in connection with the attempt on the life of Madaripur college teacher Ripon Chakrawarty, was killed in a reported gunfight between his associates and police at Miarchar of Madaripur Sadar upazila. Ripon, a mathematics lecturer of Madaripur Government Naziumuddin College, was hacked by Fahim and some other criminals when he answered a doorbell at his residence in the district
town on June 15. Locals caught Fahim while fleeing after the attack and handed him over to police. Khaleda alleged that police and ruling party men are ‘involved’ in all the murder incidents taking place in the country. She accused the law enforcers of repressing and harassing common people and opposition leaders and activists in this holy month of Ramadan in the name of mass arrest. “Our leaders and activists can’t even take sehri at their houses smoothly as police have indulged in an arrest business. They need huge money before eid as their living standard has now become high.”
The BNP chief said the government has destroyed the judiciary through politicisation, blocking the way for getting justice and equal treatment from the court by common people and opposition men.
