UNB, Dhaka :
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Sunday said people are waiting to see what steps the judiciary takes after a junior minister made a “contemptuous” comment on the under-trial cases filed against her.
She made the remarks in a tweet message following state minister for LGRD Mashiur Rahman Ranga’s remark about her conviction.
“Newspapers reported that an unelected state minister said Khaleda Zia will be sent to jail in the next 15 days. Isn’t it a clear case of contempt of court? People are watching how the judiciary protects its independence,” she said in her tweet.
In another tweet in Bangla, she also said people are carefully watching what measures the acting Chief Justice is going to take to protect the independence of the judiciary.
On Friday last, the state minister at a programme at Chakaria unit Jatiya Party’s office in Cox’s Bazar said Khaleda Zia will have to go to jail in 15 days in the corruption cases filed against her.
The trial of Zia Charitable and the Zia Orphanage Trust graft cases filed against Khaleda and others are at the final stage and the Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 may pronounce the verdict in February next, court sources said.
