Although the ongoing hartal-blockade could not melt the ice even after passing of two months, BNP-led 20-party alliance is still rigid on its stance.
Sources said, BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia believes that a positive result will come from the current movement if it takes more times. So, she is firm to continue the blockade programme for one more month. The BNP chief now
relies on the international quarters. She believes that the government can’t avert the international pressure to hold the mid-term election although the presence of the 20-party men is thin in the agitation field. Several BNP leaders said that the light would be seen finally at the end of the tunnel. The government couldn’t cling to power denying the pressure from all quarters, including the international forums, they said.
BNP standing committee member Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman on Friday told The New Nation that the government has to reach a compromise. The movement of the 20-party alliance has drawn the attention of all quarters. It may take more times, but it must be successful, he said.
Khaleda Zia has already spent two months in her Gulshan office since January 3, while the current political impasse began from January 4 centering a planned rally of the BNP-led alliance in the city on January 5. Having failed to come out of the office on that day, the BNP chief announced the ongoing non-stop blockade programme. She did not relax the programme even after death of his younger son Arafat Rahman Koko.
Alongside the blockade, the 20-party alliance has been enforcing hartal on all the working days since February 1. BNP Joint-Secretary General Salahuddin Ahmed said that they would opt for harsher programme if the government looked reluctant to accept their demands. They might call hartal again tomorrow (Sunday).
Mohilda Dal General Secretary Shirin Sultana, who has been staying with the BNP chief in her Gulshan office, said that as Khaleda Zia already spent over two months in the office, she was ready to spend more times for the success of the movement.
The ongoing countrywide blockade is the longest-ever nonstop political programme in the country. Although BNP leaders said that Khaleda Zia is rigid on her stance to continue the movement until any result, senior leaders of the party and the alliance partners have not knowledge about the strategy of the BNP chief.
Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman said that they couldn’t contact the BNP chief due to the situation, while Islami Oikya Jote chairman Maulana Abdul Latif Nejami said that Khaleda Zia’s decision would be considered as the decision of the 20-party alliance.
