Khaleda plans to strengthen party with young leadership

Ehsanul Haque Jasim :The BNP is going to reshuffle its leadership with inclusion of young and energetic leaders apparently to make the party stronger, and to launch a fresh and effective anti-government movement, sources said. In line with the new strategy, the party’s national executive committee and other bodies will be reconstituted where sacrifice of the young, honest and dedicated leaders in the street movement will be appreciated. The contribution of senior leaders of the party will also be taken into consideration, they said. Senior party leaders said BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia now wants to launch fresh and effective movement after reshuffling the party. She wants to see the new committees of the party and its front bodies with the dedicated leaders so that they can take to the streets. “Khaleda Zia will launch next course of action after reconstituting the central committee of the party,” BNP standing committee member ASM Hannan Shah said on Monday. On Saturday, Khaleda Zia herself said that the central executive committee of her party will be reshuffled. The process of the forming new committee will start soon.When asked, the party’s international affairs secretary and current spokesman Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon told The New Nation that Khaleda Zia had disclosed the plan of the party. The central committee and other committees of the party, including district units, will be reconstituted through councils. She has taken the plan to strengthen the party, he added. It is learnt that Khaleda Zia has taken the plan aiming to overcome the weak points of the party. The young, honest and dedicated leaders will be given the important posts to run the party in any adverse situation. A good number of leaders from the district units and grassroots level might be picked up for the next central committee. The district committees of the party will also be reconstituted with young leadership. Khaleda Zia also plans to attend many council meetings at the grassroots level to gear up the local leadership, party sources said.The last national council of the BNP was held in 2009. The tenure of the current central committee had expired two and a half years ago. “We are planning to hold the next council, but the time of holding the council has not been finalised till now,” said Asaduzzaman Ripon. The party high command is also thinking to bring a change in the secretary general’s post. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is now the acting secretary general of the party. He may be replaced in the party’s standing committee. The standing committee will also be reconstituted. Some of the old and ailing leaders might be given place in the advisory council, the sources said.Khaleda Zia also wants to reconstitute the Dhaka city unit and some important front bodies by dissolving the existing committees for their failure to play due role in the street movement. The party high command believes that the incumbent convening committee of Dhaka city unit, led by Mirza Abbas, also failed to play vital role in the streets. Party insiders said that central and grassroots level leaders and activists are annoyed with the current leadership Dhaka city unit for its poor role in the movement. In this backdrop, the city unit may be reconstituted with young leaders. Juba Dal president Moazzem Hossain Alal, current member secretary of the city unit Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel and some other names of the young leaders are being discussed for the city unit. BNP chairperson’s adviser Advocate Ahmed Azam Khan said that Khaleda Zia is working for the next central committee. She will hold meetings with senior leaders of the party and the professional leaders to discuss the next strategy of the movement. The party’s reconstitution will be a strategy for strengthening the party and launching an effective movement, he said. The party’s joint secretary general Mohammad Shahjahan said that the reconstitution of party’s committee is a regular process. The next committee will be formed appreciating the dedication of the party’s leaders in the street movement.
