UNB, Dhaka :
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is going to the UK within two or three days for medical treatment. “The Chairperson is going to the UK for medical treatment. She’s likely to leave either on Tuesday or the day after on Wednesday. The date depends on doctor’s appointment in London. It may be August 11, 12 and 13,” said BNP spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon on Monday.
As Khaleda Zia needs to consult doctors twice, she will be staying in the UK for 7-10 days, Ripon told reporters replying to a query at a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan office. Though Ripon did
not elaborate the BNP chairperson’s illness, sources in the party said she will receive treatment in London for eye problems.
Khaleda Zia is likely to meet BNP leaders staying in London depending on her health condition. “Since she (Khaleda) was the Prime Minister for several times and is also the chief of a major political party, it is not unusual for her to sit in such meetings,” the BNP leader said in response to a query.
Following the 111 political changeover in 2007, Khaleda and her two sons Tarique Rahman and Arafat Rahman Koko were arrested on corruption charges. After their release in 2008, Tarique along with his wife and one daughter went to London for medical treatment. Since then, Tarique has been staying in London.
Khaleda was supposed to visit Saudi Arabia during the last Ramadan to perform Umrah and meet Tarique, but she finally postponed the trip. In 2011, Khaleda met Tarique in London on her way back home from the USA.
