Two lawsuits have been lodged in Narail against Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy for their recent comments on the Liberation War martyrs.
Awami League supporter Sheikh Ashik Billah lodged two ‘one crore’ defamation suits against the BNP leaders in a Narail court on Tuesday. One crore translates to ten million. The court has ordered police to submit separate reports.
Plaintiff’s lawyer Abdus Salam Khan said the complaints had been filed under Section 500, 501 and 502 of the penal code. “The court accepted the complaints and ordered police to investigate and submit reports by Feb 11, 2016,” he said. Plaintiff Billah said,
“I honour the Liberation War of Bangladesh. I was deeply hurt by the BNP leaders’ remarks, hence I filed those cases.”
According to the case details, Khaleda had expressed her doubts on the Liberation War’s death toll figure, claiming earlier on Dec 21 that the number of martyrs was debatable.
“There is a debate about how many hundreds of thousands were martyred in the Liberation War. Different books give different accounts,” she said.
Gayeshwar Roy, on Dec 25, supported Khaleda’s speech and demanded a ‘survey’ for accurate death tolls.
He also commented ‘in an offensive tone’ on the roles of the martyred Intellectuals of Bangladesh.
Earlier in December, another case was lodged with the Narhail district magistrate court against Khaleda by Raihan Faruqi Imam, a freedom fighter’s son.
