UNB, Dhaka :
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Friday urged the government to send necessary relief materials to cyclone-hit areas.
In a statement, she accused the government of having failed to stand beside the storm-hit people with necessary relief support. “The government has so far failed to carry out any mentionable relief activities. It’s very regrettable.”
She claimed over a lakh of people in Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Bhola, Laxmipur, Chandpur, Feni, Barisal, Barguna, Jhalakati, Khulna, Bagerhat, Satkhira, Noakhali, Patuakhali, Pirojpur and the Chittagong Hill Tracts
rendered homeless due to the sudden flood caused by heavy rains under the influence of storm ‘Komen’.
“Most upazila headquarters of those districts have got disconnected from district towns as many roads went under floodwater,” the BNP chief said.
Under the circumstances, Khaleda said, people in the areas are passing an inhumane life for lack of pure drinking water, food, medicine and shelter. “I strongly demand the government immediately start operation to rescue the affected people and supply pure water, medicine and relief materials for them,” she said.
Khaleda also demanded the government take immediate steps to rehabilitate those lost their shelters in the storm.
She claimed that her party has already started relief activities in the storm-affected areas. Khaleda directed her party leaders and activists at all levels to stand beside the people of the storm-hit areas with their best efforts to alleviate their sufferings.
