BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has said that the ruling Awami League will face a debacle in the December 30 municipal election if it is held in a free, fair and credible manner. She is confident of her party’s landslide victory in the polls.
“I have field-level information that ruling party will embrace a huge defeat. We will win the polls bagging 80 per cent votes, as the voters are eagerly waiting to cast ballots in favour of `Sheaf of Paddy` for BNP nominated mayor candidates in the municipal polls,” the BNP chief told a programme in the auditorium of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Sunday.
A faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) arranged their biennial council in the SCBA building. Khaleda Zia attended its inaugural session as chief guest. This is for the first time that the BFUJ (pro-BNP faction) has to organise its council session outside the National Press Club.
Khaleda Zia dismissed an AL survey, which claims that its candidates would win 201 of the 234 municipalities in the December 30 polls. She accused the ruling party of carrying out propaganda in the name of election survey. The government is trying to rig the municipal elections, she alleged.
The BNP chief claimed that she knows about the result of the true survey and those indicate ruling party is destined to defeat. “The true survey results suggest AL’s debacle. The ruling party resorted to such tactic of false propaganda only to legalise their corruption.”
She alleged that the government has imposed various bans ahead of the polls in attempt to implement its ill-motive. Lambasting the government for its ‘oppressive acts’, she said, “It (government) wants to eliminate all its opponents.”
She said it has been heard that journalists would not be allowed to enter the polling centres on the polls day. If it is true then it is clear that their aim is to rig the polls, she said. She also said that the journalists must stay inside the polling centres and urged them to project the real picture.
She also urged the voters to go to their respective polling stations to exercise their franchise in a festive mood on the voting day.
The BNP chief said that through contesting the polls her party has proved that it is an election-oriented party. It wants to contest the election and believes in free, fair and inclusive election. It does not believe in one-party election through stuffing ballot boxes to win own candidates, she added.
She said Chief Election Commissioner and other commissioners in the Election Commission are more sycophants of the government. She urged the administration to remain neutral saying BNP has no division and dispute with them.
