BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has expressed her grave concern over the extreme miseries, plight and extensive losses of crop field, houses and commercial establishments of people with the deterioration of flood situation in several parts of the country, particularly in the northern districts.
In a statement issued on Monday, she hit out at the government’s indifference to overcome the catastrophic situation and to help the flood victims. “The government did not take any effective action to ease the situation and resolve the sufferings of the flood-affected people. No adequate efforts are seen on the part of the government in this regard. The flood victims are not receiving necessary relief materials or other assistance,” she said. She also said that the floods had rendered a large number of people of the northern districts homeless. Many of them lost their belongings alongside with domestic animals while many others are facing extensive losses of crops and vegetables. In many areas, roadways are flooded while educational activities disrupted due to inundation of classrooms. River erosion also continues, she said.
In this situation, the people are facing acute crisis of food, pure drinking water and medicines. Even, some people had died in the flood. But the government’s efforts in this regard are very poor, claimed the BNP Chief.
She alleged that the apathy of the government to save flood embankments resulted in the severe flood.
Khaleda Zia expressed her deep sympathy for the flood-hit people. She also conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved families who lost their family members. She asked the leaders and workers of the BNP and the 20-party alliance to stand besides the flood-affected people in northern districts of the country.
