Niko graft case: Khaleda asked to appear in court Feb 4

The Special Judge Court-9 of Dhaka yesterday asked BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and 10 other accused to appear in it on February 4 in the Niko graft case.
Judge Mahmudul Hasan of the court passed the order after hearing in the case on Monday.
A total of 14 cases including the Niko graft case were shifted to the makeshift court set up at Bakshibazar in the Dhaka on January 8. The hearing of the Niko graft case was
 
 held yesterday for the first time in the makeshift court. The trial of the Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust graft cases against Khaleda Zia has been going on in the same court building.
Public Prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain Kajal, who is also lawyer for Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), filed a petition seeking an arrest of warrant against Barrister Moudud Ahmed, another accused in the case, as he was absent during the hearing yesterday. The court is likely to hear the petition on February 4. Meanwhile, Khaleda Zia also could not appear in the court due to health reasons on Monday.
The ACC filed the case on December 9, 2007 accusing Khaleda Zia and several others as they had abused powers to award a gas exploration and extraction deal to Canadian Company Niko when she was the Prime Minister between 2001 and 2006. The accused persons include AKM Mosharraf Hossain, former State Minister for Energy, Khandaker Shahidul Islam, former acting energy secretary, and Kashem Sharif, vice-president (South Asia) of Niko Resources Bangladesh Ltd.
