Court Correspondent :
The High Court Division of the Supreme Court on Tuesday extended for one year, its earlier order that granted bail to BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in a case filed for killing seven persons, setting fire on a bus in Cumilla in 2015.
The High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice SM Mojibur Rahman passed the order yesterday following a petition filed on behalf of Khaleda Zia seeking extension of her bail in the case.
It was filed after seven persons died and 25/26 others were injured when a bus was torched in Cumilla’s Chouddagram area during an anti-government agitation of the BNP-led 20-party alliance on February 3, 2015. The High Court bench on March 6 this year granted bail to Khaleda Zia for six months in the case. Barrister Kayser Kamal appeared for the former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.
Deputy Attorney General Dr Md Bashir Ullah later told newsmen that Khaleda Zia cannot be released from the jail because she is convicted and sentenced to 10 years and seven years’ imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft and Zia Charitable Trust graft cases respectively. She is yet to get bail in these two cases, he added.
