The critical physical condition of injured Sylhet college student Khadiza Begum Nargis, who was hacked by a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader with a sharp weapon, has not changed much, doctors at Dhaka’s Square Hospitals say.
The details of her condition will be shared with the media on Saturday morning, the hospital’s Medical and Critical Care Department Consultant Mirza Nazimuddin told bdnews24.com on Friday.
He said the 72 hours during which Khadiza, who is still unconscious, had been kept under close observation will end at 5pm Friday. “Her condition hasn’t changed. We can take it positively as the condition didn’t deteriorate. She will be under observation for another day and the media will be briefed on Saturday morning.”
Badrul Alam, Assistant Secretary of the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) unit of the BCL, had hacked Khadiza, a Sylhet Government Women’s College student, with a machete in broad daylight on MC College campus last Monday. He was, however, detained right after the incident. A case was also started against him over the gruesome attack. Police on Wednesday said Badrul has confessed in court to hacking Khadiza with a sharp weapon. SUST authorities have also expelled attacker Badrul Alam after the incident.
Square Hospitals’ Neurosurgery Assistant Consultant Dr AM Rejaul Sattar on Tuesday had said that Khadiza, who sustained serious brain injury after her skull was ruptured in the attack, had a ‘5 to 10 percent possibility of staying alive’. After performing a surgery on her, doctors had appeared pessimistic about her chances of surviving the critical wounds. Khadiza, who also received cut injuries on her hands and legs, was put on artificial ventilation following the operation. Dr Sattar, who was overseeing her treatment, had said that if her condition improves, she will be given orthopaedic treatment for other wounds.
