With the aim to modernize Khulna region, the Khulna Development Authority (KDA) has implemented over 50 development projects in last 55 years.
KDA has also taken up 19 mega projects of which six are under fast implementation, sources said.
Apart from remodeling Khulna region, the schemes are targeted to develop Noapara, Dumuria, Batiaghata and Mongla port with new infrastructures.
In 1961, Khulna Development Authority (KDA) was established for 181.30 square kilometer area in Khulna with the view to establish a modern Khulna city. KDA brought under its jurisdiction 824.76 square km more from 2001 to 2015,sources said.
Most of the 50 projects were implemented with government funds and a few with own funds of KDA. Besides, six more projects, with KDSA funds, are now under implementation, they said.
The projects mainly focus on reducing housing problems, expansion of urbanization, easing pressure on the roads, setting up a number of industries and income generation.
The projects which were implemented by government funds include building of roads, residential areas, markets, College, Park, Bus Terminal and other establishments.
KDA is attaching importance mainly to the development of the city, Dumuria, Noapara and Mongla Port, sources said adding that six projects have been set to be implemented by the year 2018.
Besides, KDA, would implement 13 more approved and unapproved projects for the development of Khulna.
The approved projects include construction of the extension building of KDA at a cost of Tk 16.68 crore, construction of a commercial complex in Nirala Residential Area at a cost of Tk 10.6 crore, development work of Ahsanabad Residential Area at a cost of Tk 125.11 crore, construction work of a digital archive and management software center at a cost of Tk 5.39 crore and construction of a rest house at a cost of Tk 4.1 crore.
These projects are expected to be complete by 2016.
Seven more projects are awaiting approval. These are construction of 21.10 km road from Barakpur to Chandanimahal, construction of Sheikh Russel Civic Center, Construction of a three-storey building at Khalishpur Natun Rasta intersection with auditorium,gymnasium and club facilities, construction of three link roads from Satkhira Road to city bypass, construction of a 450- metre long overpass at Phulbari level crossing and construction of bridge tunnel on the banks of the Rupsha river.
Talking to BSS, the chief engineer of KDA Wahid Azhar, said KDA has been trying to build a planned modern Khulna. After materializing the rest projects, the region, including the industrial city, will give a new look.
