The fourth Namaz-e-Janaza of Jatiya Party [Zafar] Chairman and also former Prime Minister Kazi Zafar Ahmed was held at Azad Masjid in city’s Gulshan area after the Asr prayer on Friday.
The deceased’s elder son-in-law Syed Almas Kabir and grandson Ayman Kabir, former parliamentarian Shah Shahid Sarwar, joint secretary general of JP (a faction) SMM Alam and other party leaders and activists attended the janaza.
Syed Almas Kabir said the body will be kept at the deceased’s Gulshan residence. Later, the body will be taken to Cheora Kazi Bari in Chauddagram of Comilla district for his
burial after the Zohr prayer.
Meanwhile, the deceased’s family members requested the government to bury Kazi Zafar Ahmed with full state honour as he was a freedom fighter and a former Prime Minister.
Earlier, the third Namaz-e-Janaza of Jatiya Party (Zafar) Chairman and also former Prime Minister Kazi Zafar Ahmed was held at Baitul Mokarram National Mosque yesterday.
Ganaswasthya Kendra founder Zafrullah Chowdhury, former governor of Bangladesh Bank (BB) Dr Saleh Uddin Ahmed, BNP vice-chairman Abdullah Al Noman, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s adviser Shamsuzzaman Dudu, party’s education affairs secretary Khairul Kabir Khokon, Jatiya Party (a faction) secretary general Mostofa Jamal Haider, Kalyan Party Chairman Major General (retd.) Syed Ibrahim Bir Pratik and Jamaat leader Professor Mujibur Rahman attended the janaza held at 2:01pm.
Besides, convicted war criminal Delawar Hossain Sayedee’s son Shamim Sayed, Labour Party secretary general Mostafizur Rahman Iran, former minister Abul Hasan, former secretary Zafar Ahmed Chowdhury, Dhaka Union of Journalists (a faction) Poet Abdul Hye Sikder, BNP media wing officer Shamsuddin Haider Didar, DAB secretary general AZM Zahid Hossain and leaders and activists of several other parties took part in the janaza.
Then he was taken to Cheora Kazi Bari in Chauddagram of Comilla district. He will be buried in his family graveyard after fifth janaza today Saturday.
Earlier in the day, the first Namaz-e-Janaza of Kazi Zafar Ahmed was held at Tongi mill gate mosque adjacent to Ijtema ground at 8:15am.
His second Janaza was held at South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad at 11:05am where BNP standing committee member ASM Hannan Shah, BNP chairperson’s adviser Advocate Ahmed Azam Khan along with several hundred people from all walks of life attended the janaza.
The veteran politician breathed his last at United Hospital in city after a cardiac attack at the age of 76 on Thursday.
Kazi Zafar, who earned reputation as a leftist student leader in the 1960s, served as commerce minister, deputy prime minister and finally prime minister in the Ershad’s government in the 80s.
He was Prime Minister from March 20, 1989 to December 6, 1990. Born in 1939 in Chauddagram upazila of Comilla, Kazi Zafar obtained MA degree in History from Dhaka University.
Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad sacked Zafar from his party on November 29, 2013 as he made ‘derogatory’ remarks against the former military ruler following his decision to join the 10th parliamentary elections and the election-time cabinet.
Later, Zafar reconstituted the Jatiya Party committee by removing its Chief HM Ershad and claimed he is the chairman of the new committee while Ghulam Moshi its secretary general.
On January 25, 2014, Kazi Zafar-led faction of Jatiya Party joined the BNP-led alliance.
Born on July 1 in 1939 at an eminent Kazi family in Comilla, Zafar passed Entrance examinations from Khulna Zilla School and Intermediate examinations from Rajshahi Government College. He had his Honours and Masters in History from Dhaka University.
