Two maiden centuries by Imrul Kayes and Shamsur Rahman helped Bangladesh to make 409 for the loss of eight wickets in the first innings against Sri Lanka on the third day of the second Test at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong on Thursday.
Earlier, electing to bat first, Sri Lanka piled up a massive 587 in the first innings on the second day.
Bangladesh trailed by 178 runs with two wickets remaining in the first innings.
The Tigers resumed their overnight score of 86 for the loss of one wicket and then, Imrul Kayes and Shamsur Rahman contributed more 146 runs in the second wicket partnership before Shamsur Rahman was cleanly bowled out by Ajantha Mendis when Bangladesh’s score was 232 for the loss of two wickets.
Imrul Kayes knocked a sedate 115. His 218-ball innings was laced with 17 boundaries and one over boundary. Kayes was also bowled out by Ajanta Mendis when the team’s total was 259 for the loss of four wickets.
Shamsur Rahman notched up a calm 106. His 191-ball knock was ornamented with 11 fours and a sixer.
After dismissal of Imrul Kayes, Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim put up together 60 runs in the fifth wicket partnership before Mushfiqur Rahim was caught at the short leg by Kaushal Silva off Dilruwan Perera when the hosts total was 319 for the loss of five wickets.
Shakib Al Hasan hit an exact 50 from 90 balls featuring nine shots across the fence.
Hasan was caught at the short cover by Dimuth Karunaratne off Dilruwan Perera when Bangladesh’s total was 350 for the loss of six wickets.
Nasir Hossain scored 42 off 65 balls amid seven fours. Hossain was caught behind by wicketkeeper Dinesh Chandimal off Ajantha Mendis when Bangladesh’s total was 396 for the loss of seven wickets. It was a controversial decision of the umpire as it seemed that the delivery of Mendis did not touch the willow of Nasir. New sensation Shohag Gazi was trapped leg before wicket in the next ball of Mendis.
Ajantha Mendis claimed four wickets at the cost of 84 runs, while Dilruwan Perera captured three wickets for 119 runs.
Today Mahmudullah Riyad and Al-Amin Hossain will resume their first innings with not out 30 and three runs respectively.
