Katka Tragedy Day was observed yesterday (Tuesday) in Khulna University. KU authorities has chalked out different programs marking the day. KU sources said, on March 13, 2004, eleven students of architecture discipline of the university including two BUET students drowned into the deep sea while they went to excursion at Katka point in the Sundarbans. The dead were Arnaj Rifat Rupa, Mahmudur Rahman, Maksumul Aziz Mostazi, Abdullahel Baki, Kazi Mueed bin Wali, Kawsar Ahmed Khan, Munadil Raihan bin Mahbub, Md. Ashrafuzzaman and Towhidul Enam of KU and Samiul and Sakil of BUET. Since then KU has been observing the day as mourning day. KU had taken different programs including wearing black badge, mourning rally, placing floral wreaths on Katka monument, photograph exhibition, Milad doa mahfil, distribution foods among orphans, discussion meeting and lighting candle light vigil in the evening.
Being informed by another playmate, locals recovered one off the bodies. Later, a team of fire service and civil defence from Rangpur recovered the other body after three hours of frantic efforts.
Later, the bodies were handed over to their respective families, said Amirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Ghoraghat Police Station.
