Excessive bleeding due to negligence on the part of doctors and nurses in attempting to deliver a premature baby led to the deaths of a mother and new born. The incident took place last Monday at the Kapasia Upazila Health Complex in Gazipur, which was awarded the Public Administration Medal for the success of the ‘Maternal Mortality Free Kapasia Model’.
Zahidul Islam, husband of senior maternity staff nurse Asma Akter, is a Saudi expatriate. He is the son of Belayet of Dhalagarh Bridge area of Targaon village.
According to sources, senior staff nurse of Kapasia Upazila Health Complex Asma Akhter became pregnant and doctors and colleagues of the hospital tried to deliver the baby on Sunday. The newborn died after birth and the mother died when she was taken to Uttara Highcare Hospital at night due to excessive bleeding. Her first child was delivered by caesarean section seven years ago, but colleagues ignored it and pushed two injections in a row.
The doctors and nurses on duty tried to force the delivery of the baby. As a result, when he started bleeding profusely, he was first taken to a private hospital in Gazipur. When his condition worsened, he was shifted to Uttara High Care Hospital where doctors declared him dead. It is alleged that the doctors and nurses on duty make the decision of normal delivery against the wishes of the members of the maternity family.
Gynecologists say that since the first child was delivered by caesarean section, it was not advisable to try to deliver the second child normally. As a result of force, the uterus of the mother is severely damaged.
In this regard, Kapasia Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Abdus Salam Sarkar told local journalists that it was not possible to stop the bleeding of senior staff nurse Asma Akter when she was forced to give birth at an early age. As the uterus was damaged, it was delayed to take her to Dhaka as per the advice and later she died.
The Kapasia Upazila Health Complex authorities, who have recently set a precedent by bringing maternal mortality to zero and have recently been awarded the Public Administration Medal, have shown indifference. The ‘Maternal Mortality Free Kapasia Model’ project itself has drawn the attention of conscious quarters to the negligence of her fellow nurses during childbirth.
