KAMPS conducts free cataract surgery of 300 poor patients

Kidney Awareness Monitoring and Prevention Society (KAMPS), a non-profit voluntery health care organisation has conducted free cataract surgery of more than 300 poor patients of Tangail at the Bangladesh Eye Trust Hospital at Rayerbazar in Dhaka, says a press release.
Beginning from May 28 the operation will run till June 3 while the patients are being brought from Tangail to Dhaka with the up-down expenses bore by KAMPS.
On the occasion, KAMPS also organised a discussion meeting styled ‘Andho Jone Deho Alo’ (Give light to blind people) at the premises of the Bangladesh Eye Trust Hospital at Sultanganj, Rayerbazar in city.
The patients were earlier registered during the yearly ‘Free Medical Camp-2015’ in honor of the Language Martyred, held in Tangail on 21st February, where the KAMPS also provided treatment to nearly 3000 patients for the daylong in various departments.
As the eye patients were given hope that those who need cataract surgery, will be taken to Dhaka for surgery, accordingly the cataract surgery to more than 300 patients are being done.
Member of the Planning Commission, Md. Humayun Khalid was present in the discussion meeting as chief guest while Chairman of KAMPS and Chief Consultant, Department of Kidney, Lab Aid Specialised Hospital, Dhaka presented keynote paper on the occasion.
Additional Secretary, Ministry of Public Administration, Md. Abdur Rouf, former Captain of the National Cricket Team, Bangladesh, Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu and Chairman of Bangladesh Eye Hospital, Dr. Mahbubur Rahman attended the meeting as special guests with Adviser of KAMPS and former General Manager of Bangladesh Bank, Abdul Malek Mia in the chair.
Referring to WHO, keynote speaker of the meeting, Prof. MA Samad said 48 percent of blindness occure due to the cataract and at least 80 percent of blindness is possible to prevent, the treatment cost is also not so high. People carry the cataract because of unawareness as well as poverty as a result at one stage they certainly sustain blindness.
 “According to the Bangladesh National Blindness Survey-2000, the ratio of blindness among above 30 people in the country is 1.53 percent, means there have nearly 6,75,000 blind people in the country. Cataract affected people are 79.6 percent which expedite the blindness”, he said.
Prof. Samad that cataract patients are 5,50,000 and comparatively the ration of cataract surgery among female is much less than male whereas the surgery of most patients is possible with the existing facilities.
He mentioned that KAMPS conduct operation of nearly 300 cataract patients each year by its own initiative and expenses which is very lesss comparing to the necessity so it needs to enhance facilitues of KAMPS as well as the affluent and philanthropic persons or organisations will have to come forward more in doing this job.
Terming the eyesight as an invaluable wealth of human being, Prof. Samad said if any individual come forward to donate or contribute in saving the eyesight of any poor patient nothing great can be happen than that of it.
Speakers in the meeting urged the affluent class of people to stand by the poor and the people of deprived of opportunity in such a poor and populous country like Bangladesh.
Starting from May 28 the cataract surgery of more than 300 patients is taking place every day partly and will run till June 3, 2015.
An efficient and experienced team of 20 Physicians led by Dr. Ishtiak Anwar has been conducting the operations at the Bangladesh Eye Trust Hospital.
