Kamar Ahmed Simon’s latest film project Shonkhodhoni (Silence of the Seashell) has won the World Cinema Fund (WCF), a production funding backed by the Berlin Film Festival. Written and directed by Kamar Ahmad Simon and produced by Sara Afreen, the Silence of the Seashell will receive the production funding within the framework of the WCF Europe program.
Earlier, the Silence of the Seashell was one of the 10 scripts invited in La Fabrique Cinema du Monde Cannes 2014, an exclusive program fostering promising directors from around the world. Last month, the film was also awarded with the National Film Grant provided by the Government of Bangladesh.
The WCF, an initiative of the German Federal Foundation for Culture and the Berlin Film Festival, is one of the most competitive grants of world cinema. The WCF works to develop and support cinema in regions with a weak film infrastructure. The WCF supports films that could not be made without additional funding: films that stand out with an unconventional aesthetic approach, that tell powerful stories and transmit an authentic image of their cultural roots.
Films like Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (Golden Palm winner in Cannes 2010), The Milk of Sorrow (Golden Bear winner in Berlin 2009), Paradise Now (Golden Globe winner of 2006) and Silent Light (Jury Award winner in Cannes 2007) were among the earlier winning titles of WCF.
