Kalihati, Ghatail OCs closed over Tangail police firing

Officers-in-charge of Kalihati Police Station and Ghatail Police Station were closed to the district police lines on Sunday night in connection with Friday’s ‘police firing’ on a demonstration in Kalihati upazila. The two police officers are – Mukhlesur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Ghatail Police Station, and Shahidul Islam, officer-in-charge Kalihati Police Station. Sanjay Sarker, acting superintendent of Tangail confirmed the incident. Earlier, three people — Faruque, Shamim and Shyamol Chandra — were killed and 50 others injured, including four with bullets, as police allegedly opened fire and charged baton on some people demonstrating in Kalihati upazila on Friday afternoon. Bullet-injured Rubel died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the capital on Sunday, raising the death toll from the incident to four. Meanwhile, police filed two cases with Ghatail Police Station and Kalihati Police Station against 700/800 unidentified people for obstructing police from discharging their duties in connection with the incident Earlier, seven policemen — three sub-inspectors and four constables– have been suspended over the incident on Saturday.–UNB
