Staff Reporter :
Algerian national Abu Ubaida Kadir on Wednesday admitted his involvement in the drowning of 17-year old Zubair Ahmed in city’s Uttara area on October 4. He was Ordinary Level (O-level) student. Kadir, also football and swimming coach of the victim, confessed to the Police that he had left Zubir in the pond as he did not submit to his desire.
But the motive behind the killing has not yet been clear, said the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
The lone eyewitness to the murder in his deposition made with a Dhaka court under Section 164 said that Zubair was molested and killed by Kadir in the pond after they played a football match near the pond.
In the confessional statement, the witness said that he had seen the whole incident but did not disclose it as Kadir put pressure on him.
In an earlier statement to police, the eyewitness claimed that Kadir offered him help to go abroad if he remained quiet about the killing.
Police said that actually the post mortem report would make the whole thing clear. SM Nazmul Islam, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Detective Branch of police, said, investigators are trying to collect more evidences and information about Kadir’s involvement in the murder and investigating his illegal stay in Bangladesh.
The documents we found reveal that Kadir is an Algerian citizen who came to Bangladesh in 1998 for a degree on Information Technology from Darul Ihsan University, Nazmul said.
Kadir’s student visa expired in 2001. He destroyed his passport and other documents and has been living in Bangladesh illegally.
Police recovered Zubair’s body from a pond at Uttara Sector-4 on October 5.
