Last season’s finalist Juventus remained atop its Champions League group following a dull 0-0 draw with Borussia Moenchengladbach on Wednesday.
Apart from a dangerous free kick from Paul Pogba early in the second half that ‘Gladbach goalkeeper Yan Sommer dived to push away, there were few chances for either side.
Juventus has seven points, one more than Manchester City, which rallied to beat Sevilla 2-1. Sevilla is next with three points, while Gladbach earned its first point in Group D.
Juventus argued for a red card but Alvaro Dominguez was only shown yellow four minutes before halftime for a last-man foul on Alvaro Morata, who had scored in five consecutive Champions League matches.
Juventus pushed for a late goal as coach Massimiliano Allegri substituted all three forwards for fresh legs but still had trouble creating scoring opportunities.
“The episode at the end of the first half could have changed the match but we should have changed anyway in terms of our technical approach,” Allegri said. “I’m very angry tonight because we needed to do better in the last 30 meters.”
Still, Juventus extended its home unbeaten streak in Europe to 15 matches, stretching back to a 2-0 loss to Bayern Munich in the 2013 quarterfinals.
Juventus has also had trouble scoring in a rough start in Serie A, producing just nine goals in eight matches to leave the four-time defending champion nine points behind leader Fiorentina.
“In certain situations you need to be more lucid. We have to improve and we have to do so quickly,” Allegri said. “When you have teammates better positioned than you are, you have to pass them the ball.
It’s now two matches where we haven’t been able to score a goal. At times we’ve been a bit egoistic.”
Juventus was also held 0-0 at Inter Milan on Sunday.
The Bianconeri are sorely missing the departed Andrea Pirlo, Arturo Vidal and Carlos Tevez.
Newly signed forward Mario Mandzukic wasn’t in sync with Morata and Juan Cuadrado is now scoreless in 10 matches since joining Juventus on loan from Chelsea.
Substitutes Roberto Pereyra, Simone Zaza and Paulo Dybala also struggled.
