Jute harvesting begins in Manikganj

Harvesting of jute has begun in the district with much enthusiasm.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said a total of 3748 hectares of land was brought under jute cultivation this year.
Deputy Director of DAE Habibur Rahman Chowdhury said, Tosha variety has been cultivated in 2956 hectares of land with a production target of 40,061 bale.
Local variety was produced in 776 hectares of land with a production target of 6093 bales and kenaf variety has been produced in16 hectares of land with production target of 253 bales of jute.
Seeds, fertilizers and insecticides were supplied in due time to farmers in addition to necessary training.
Ali Hossain, a jute producer of Charigram of Srinagar upazila, said, soil of Singair upazila is very much suitable for jute cultivation. They were interested in cultivating jute as it is still the main cash crop of the area.
Billal Uddin, a jute producer of Goaldangi village under Ghior upazila said, they are happy to get satisfactory production of jute this year.
‘Now we are rotting our jute in new process which needs little water,` he said adding that farmers now separate the jute fiber from the jute stalks and then keep it in the water.
Traders said market price of jute is ranging between Taka 1400 to Taka 1600 per mound depending on quality and variety.
