‘Justice Mustafa Kamal Gold Medal’ introduced

Campus Report :A new Gold Medal titled ‘Justice Mustafa Kamal Gold Medal’ has been introduced at the Department of Political Science of Dhaka University (DU). Prof Dr Nashid Kamal, daughter of late Justice Mustafa Kamal handed over a cheque for Tk 5 lakh to DU Treasurer Prof Dr Md. Kamal Uddin on Wednesday at the Vice-Chancellor’s office to introduce the gold medal in memory of her father.Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, Dean of the Faculty of Social Science Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed and Chairman of the Department of Political Science Prof Dr Nurul Amin Bepari were present on the occasion. Out of the income of this donation, every year one meritorious student who will secure the highest CGPA in MSS final examination from the Department of Political Science of DU, will be awarded ‘Justice Mustafa Kamal Gold Medal.’ DU VC Prof Arefin Siddique thanked the donor for introducing this gold medal at DU and hoped that the students would be highly benefited and encouraged from this donation. It may be mentioned that Late Mustafa Kamal was the Chief Justice of Bangladesh from 1 June 1999 to 31 December 1999. He was born in 1935 in Domar under Nilphamari district. He was the eldest son of late Abbas Uddin Ahmed, a renowned singer of folk and Islamic songs in the Indian sub-continent. He had stood 7th place in order of merit in the Matriculation examination from the Dhaka Collegiate School in 1948. He also had secured 5th position in the Intermediate Arts Examination from Jagannath College in 1950. He obtained BA (Hons) and MA degrees in Political Science from the University of Dhaka in 1953 and 1954 respectively securing 1st position in the 1st class. He took MSc (Economics) degree in Political Science from the London School of Economics and Political Science by availing of a merit scholarship for higher studies from the Government of the then-Pakistan. He also completed the Bar-at-Law course in 1959. Mustafa Kamal was appointed Chairman of the Law Commission on 6 December 2004. He died on 5 January 2015 of heart disease at his home in Dhaka.
