A group of 215 pro-BNP lawyers of the Supreme Court said that BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia did not get justice in the verdict of Zia Orphanage Trust graft case delivered on Thursday. The lawyers issued a joint statement yesterday evening condemning the verdict delivered by judge of a Special Court Dr. Md. Akhteruzzaman.
“Begum Khaleda Zia did not get justice in the case, we think. The judge was bound to deliver such verdict being politically motivated. It was clear to the people that at different stages of the trial Khaleda Zia had no connection with the charge brought against her on the basis of which the judge sentenced her,” read the statement.
It added, “We are concerned that the sentence was given to Khaleda Zia based on false charge in a false case to keep away her from the political activities of the country. We hope, Khaleda Zia will get justice in the higher court, she will be proved innocent and will come back to the people soon.”
“We are afraid that the distance of the main two political parties will be more extreme after this verdict. Even the possibility of the compromise to hold a free and fair election for the 11th Parliament with participation of all parties is now on the way to the dust,” said the statement.
Signatories to the statement include: Supreme Court Bar Association’s former Secretaries Advocate Saidur Rahman and Advocate Gias Uddin Ahmed, and bar members-Advocate Golam Arshad, Advocate A B M Waliur Rahman, Advocate Dr Rafiqul Islam Mehedi, Advocate Golam Mohammad Chowdhury Alal, Advocate A H M Qamruzzaman Mamun, Advocate Jamil Akhter Elaihi, Barrister A K M Ehsanur Rahman, Advocate Abdullah Al Mahbub, Advocate Gazi Kamrul Islam and Advocate Ayasha Akhter.
