Reza Mahmud :
One street in the capital’s south is filled with thousands of hazards for so many potholes, cracks, and unfinished work.
The dilapidated road has hundreds of big, medium and small potholes which create serious threats for every vehicle and pedestrian passing by it.
It is Jurain-Postogola to Tikatuli-Rajdhani Market street going through Gandaria, Mirhajeerbagh, Dayagonj, Narinda, Swamibagh and Narinda areas.
The road is very busy as it is led to Dhaka-Mawa highway which is connected to Dhaka with Khulna and Barishal divisions.
Hundreds of vehicles including public transports are passing by the road day and night.
Besides, thousands of pedestrians also use the road as it is close to city’s Motijheel Commercial area.
People from the above mentioned areas use the street to communicate with Motijheel and other areas by walking or by rickshaws or motorbikes.
But the streets are in the worse state for long.
Earlier, several months ago, Md. Rezaur Rahman, Chief Engineer of Dhaka South City Corporation told The New Nation that he would give directions to concern officials to take emergency measures to make the street workable.
But the street is as it was in the past.
The Chief Engineer failed to receive the phone call repeatedly from The New Nation on Saturday evening.
On spot visit, it was found that the condition of the street is worst on the east side of Dayagonj to Jurain and Postogola areas.
In its Mirhajeerbagh sides, the street is found unfit to ply on.
Thousands of different sizes of potholes are found in hazardous conditions.
“This dilapidated road is the synonym of a death trap,” said a driver of a Dhaka to Munshigonj bound bus.
He said, it is hard to give another vehicle a pass.
“There is no way to give a pass to any type of vehicle. If my bus wants to go fast overtaking any rickshaw which I found in front of my bus, it will be risky because broken roads and dangerous potholes on both sides are waiting to cause accident,” said Abdul Gafur, the bus driver.
“So, I have to stop my bus suddenly to avoid an accident. But who can say that which danger have I by breaking suddenly my speedy bus,” he expressed frustrations.
Many pedestrians alleged that they cannot walk by the road in fresh mind.
“We are always in panic whenever we pass through the road because it has no condition to use,” said Abdullah Ahsan, a resident from Gandaria.
He said there is no pavement to walk, besides, the street is in so broken condition that every vehicle plies on with risks of accident at any moment.
In rainy days the street becomes more dangerous as the potholes and broken places cannot be seen as dirty water overflows.
The bus, leguna, taxies, and other vehicles’ drivers and the local people said the road was supposed to be repaired long ago, but the indifference is the reason of worsening.
All of them urged the concern authority to start repairing the street as soon as possible.
