Residents of the city’s Jurain area on Friday demonstrated and demanded safe water from Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA).
The protest rally marched from Jurain to Shanir Akhra for about two hours chanting different slogans such as ‘No bill before supplying safe water’, ‘WASA’s contaminated water causing sickness and give us compensations’.
Demonstrators asked the WASA to ensure that they can drink water directly from taps.
“Many residents of this area became sick drinking the WASA supplied contaminated water every day. We do not want to have such impure water anymore and want to avoid the hassle to boil the water to make it safe. WASA has to ensure safe and pure water for consumers as we pay bill regularly,” said Mizanur Rahman, a resident in the area.
On Thursday, a report has been submitted to the High Court that WASA’s water is polluted in 57 city areas because of damaged supply pipes.
The local government and rural development ministry submitted the report on behalf of WASA.
The report, based on consumers’ allegations, said the WASA would test the water of those areas at the laboratories of Dhaka University, BUET, and icddr,b.
