Judiciary to remain stand-by if eviction drive barred: CJ

He urges administration, law enforcers to resist communal violence

Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha on Saturday said the judiciary will remain stand-by beside both Dhaka South and North City Corporations when they will face any resistance during the eviction drive against illegal occupation in the city.
“Occupying city’s lands, roads and footpaths illegally, those who will bar the eviction drive, the judiciary will extend its hand and stand beside the DSCC and DNCC,” he said at an inaugural session of the fourth floor of Sri Sri Madhwa Gaudiya Math at Narinda in the city yesterday.
The building is being constructed with Dhaka South City Corporation’s fund. DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon was also present on the occasion.
However, he urged the two mayors of DSCC and DNCC to remain conscious about the religious establishments during the eviction drive.
“I’m calling upon the two mayors not to damage any religious establishments,” the Chief Justice said.
He also called upon the administration and members of law enforcement agencies to become very conscious in a bid to resist communal violence.
“Attacks were launched on the Santal community and their houses were also torched. As they are very poor minority community, I hope that the administration as well as the members of different law enforcement agencies will remain careful so that no such incident will take place anywhere in the country,” Surendra Kumar Sinha said.
He said the country is marching towards with the existence of democracy and rule of law.
“Peace is the foremost prerequisite for the country to continue the ongoing development. But it is being notified that an activity is on to destroy the religious harmony. I’m urging those, who are in power, to put in their best efforts to maintain communal harmony and ensure safety and security of the people belonging to various religions.
