The Cyber Crime Tribunal of Dhaka on Thursday fixed August 14 to pronounce the verdict in the case filed for allegedly leaking the draft verdict of the International Crimes Tribunal-1 that awarded death sentence to BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and sentence was executed on November 22, last year.
Judge KM Shamsul Alam of the cyber tribunal fixed the date after both the prosecution and defence counsels completed submission of their arguments in the case.
The case was filed against SQ Chowdhuty’s wife and five others. They are — SQ Chowdhuty’s wife Farhat Quader Chowdhury, son Hummam Quader Chowdhury, manager Mahbubul Ahsan, counsel Barrister AKM Fakhrul Islam, Fakhrul’s assistant Mehedi Hasan, the International Crime Tribunal’s the then office assistant Faruk Hossain and peon Nayan Ali.
The court sent Fakhrul, Mahbub, Faruk and Nayan to jail canceling their bail in the leakage case. However, the court granted bail of Farhat up to August 14. Hummam, who is also on bail, did not appear to the court, and the court asked him to appear to it on that day following his time prayer.
Accused Mehedi is on the run, while all other accused pleaded not guilty. However, if convicted, they may get highest punishment of 14 years’ imprisonment.
On October 1,2013, soon after the pronouncement of the verdict in the war crimes case against SQ Chowdhury, his wife and family members allegedly showed “a copy of the verdict” to newsmen and claimed that the verdict was leaked.
Three days later, detectives filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station against Fakhrul, Mehedi, Faruk, Nayon and several unnamed people under the Information and Communication Technology Act, 2006.
On August 28, 2014, detectives pressed charges against Farhat, Hummam and five others for their alleged involvement in the incident and the court framed charges against them on February 15 of that year.
According to the charge sheet, Salauddin’s wife and son “hatched conspiracy and instigated” the leakage while Fakhrul “facilitated” it. Mehedi, Mahbub, Faruk and Nayan were “directly involved” in the incident.
