Judges not above law: CJ

Chief Justice M Mozammel Hossain yesterday said the judges are constitutionally independent, but not above the law.He was speaking as the chief guest at a function to award certificates to lawyers enrolled in Bar Council in 2009 at Institute of Diploma Engineers at Kakrail in the city.Bangladesh Bar Council Enrolment Committee Chairman and Supreme Court Appellate Division Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain presided over the function. Supreme Court judges, Attorney General and Bangladesh Bar Council Chairman Mahbube Alam, Bar Council Vice-Chairman and SC Bar Association President Khandaker Mahbub Hossain were present at the function, among others.Some 1,195 lawyers of Dhaka and Dhaka city bar associations enrolled in December 2009 received certificates in the function. The chief justice told the lawyers that the constitution is the country’s highest law. He advised all to have good knowledge of the constitution.The lawyers are the officers of the court and they would have to behave well inside and outside the court, he said. The responsibility of the lawyers is to assist the justice- seekers and the court and the keep the trials and laws above controversies, the chief justice said.He suggested the lawyers to go for more studies and maintain values, honesty, devotion, patience, modesty and tolerance in their work.He also advised the lawyers to make submissions in courts on legal points and not to make submissions being emotional and bring in political issues in the court. The chief justice urged all quarters not to make ‘free- style’ comments after a judgment before going through the full verdict.
