Promising director Juboraj Shamim’s debut film titled ‘Adim (The Instinct)’ bagged two awards at the 44th Moscow International Film Festival, held from August 26 to September 2. The film won Silver Saint George Award (Special Jury Award) and Netpac Jury Award at the prestigious film festival. Joboraj
dedicated this achievement to his father, Shahjahan Bhuiyan, according to the award winner filmmaker.
The journey of ‘Adim’ started in August 9, 2017, by selling shares of the film for Tk5,000. Under the banner of Juboraj’s production house, Roshayon, Amir Hamza was the cinematographer and Sujon Mahmud headed the sound and colour units.
The 84 minute Bangladesh-Netherlands co-production features no star cast. The cast members are the inhabitants of the Tongi slum where Juboraj shot the film. Sometimes the police would suspect him as a drug dealer, at other times drug dealers would allege that he is an undercover reporter, during his seven months stay at the slum. The ensemble cast includes Badshah, Shohagi, Dulal and Sadek. They take us for a hyper-realistic ride in their slum, almost blurring the line between fiction and non-fiction, at least in its visual style. It is a detailed depiction of slum life and its norms like we haven’t seen yet on the big screen.
