Jahangirnagar University (JU) BCS Officers’ Forum (JUBOF) has celebrated the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the golden jubilee of the country’s independence.
The forum comprising the former JU students, who are now serving in different capacities in the civil service, celebrated the occasions through different programmes, including staging drama and discussion recently at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) in the city’s Firmgate area .
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal addressed the discussion as the chief guest while Deputy Minister for Water Resources AKM Enamul Hoque Shameem addressed as the special guest.
A written message of Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Whip Abu Sayeed Al Mahmood Swapon, also a former JU student, was read out in the function with JUBOF president and former secretary Manwar Ahmed in the chair.
Speaking on the occasion, the home minister recalled the heinous killing
of Bangabandhu along with most of his family members and said, “Hearing the
news of chaos in the city in morning of August 15 in 1975, I came out of my
house and went to the Rakkhi Bahini Headquarters beside our residence and saw two tanks there taking position”.
Noting that the Rakkhi Bahini did not know that the tanks were bullet
less, Kamal said, “I don’t know what would have happened if they knew the
fact. It is still unclear why everyone became bewildered on that day”.
But the conspiracy of killing Bangabandhu was deep-rooted, he said,
adding, “I would like to recall my memory of a freedom fighters’ conference
at the Engineers’ Institution in December, 1974 to clear the matter. Ziaur
Rahman came out of the conference room after speaking on the occasion when I
was eating nuts at Bakultala”.
When he (Ziaur Rahman) came to Bakultala, many people who were present
there applauded him, recalling his leadership during the Liberation War
saying “You (Zia) deserve the CNC post. We thought that you would get the
post”, Kamal said, recalling Ziaur Rahman listened to all and was closing the
window of his car with a reply, “Wait and see”.
After Bangabandhu’s killing, the Rajakars returned to the country’s
politics and the national flag was hoisted in their cars, he said, adding,
“At one stage Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina returned home igniting a
hope of holding Bangabandhu murder trial. And finally it has been done”.
“We have executed the killers of Bangabandhu and are trying to hang those
who are still on the run after bringing them back to the country,” he said.
Addressing the function, AKM Enamul Hoque Shameem, also former vice-
president of JU Central Students’ Union (JUCSU), said Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina has approved different projects for infrastructural development of the
JU.
Highlighting the various development works that took place in the
university during the present Awami League (AL) government, he said a mega
project of Taka 1,445 crore is being implemented now.
Terming Sheikh Hasina as an education friendly Prime Minister, Shameem,
also former organizing secretary of the ruling AL and central president of
the Bangladesh Chhatra League, said there is nothing to be worried about the
development of the university rather, “We should work for welfare of the poor
students and offspring of the university’s staffs”.
He proposed launching a scholarship by the JUBOF in this regard.
JUBOF Vice President and Khulna Range DIG of Bangladesh Police Dr Kh
Mahid Uddin Swapan and Treasurer Rashid Uddin Bhuiyan spoke on the occasion.
JUBOF General Secretary and Deputy Commissioner (DC) for Motijheel
Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Abdul Ahad delivered a welcome
address while Dhaka Education Board Chairman Professor Nehal Ahmed and Prime
Minister’s Assistant Press Secretary-1 MM Emrul Kayas Rana were present at
the function, among others.
At the function, a souvenir titled ‘Bangabandhu’ published under the
supervision of Emrul Kayas and a research publication titled ’50 years of
pride and heritage’ were unveiled before the discussion.
Earlier, in the evening, members of the Bangladesh Police Natya Dal staged
the drama “Cursed August” written and directed by police inspector of
Narayanganj district Md Jahidur Rahman and planned by Deputy Inspector
General of Dhaka Range Police Habibur Rahman.
