A Jubo League (JL) leader was arrested in connection with the death of two teenagers who were run over by a pick up in a clash between two groups of Awami League in the city’s Mohammadpur .
Arifur Rahman Tuhin, Convener of Jubo League’s Adabar Thana unit, was arrested on Saturday night, said Biplob Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, Tejgaon Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Jamal Uddin Mir, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mohammadpur Police Station, said, Arif’s father Umar Faruk filed the murder case under Section 304 of the Penal Code accusing at least 20 people.
Tuhin was sent to a Dhaka court with a five-day remand prayer, the OC said.
Deceased Mohammad Sujon, 17, and Arif Hossain, 14, were “supporters” of an Awami League nomination seeker Sadek Khan, the police official said.
Armed with hammers, sharp weapons and brickbats, the rival group swooped on the supporters of AL leader Sadek Khan when the accident took place.
The incident happened when the AL leader was about to go to the party office with motorcade to buy nomination paper, said witnesses and his supporters.
Sadek’s men blamed the supporters of Jahangir Kabir Nanak, — another AL MP aspirant from the same constituency (Dhaka-13) — for the attacks.
