JU Correspondent :
The anti-Vice-Chancellor (VC) Senate members of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Saturday demanded VC panel election at a “symbolic senate meeting” held on the campus.
The meeting was held in front of the university’s old administrative building around 11:00am under the banner of ‘Bangabandhur Adarsha O Progotishil Shikkhok Shomaj’.
As part of the ongoing protest, the teachers alleged that JU VC Professor Farzana Islam
has violated the University Act-1973 and is running the university functions in “undemocratic” way.
Chaired by Professor Bodiar Rahman of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department, over 35 senate members of the university took part at the meeting.
The senators alleged that they were staging the “symbolic meeting” as they earlier submitted a letter to the VC signed by around 45 senators for immediately holding of the senate meeting. But Farzana did not hold any meeting in this regard.
According to the university senate act, emergency senate meeting has to be held within 21 days of submission of a memorandum to the VC, the protesters added.
Meanwhile, terming the allegations false, the VC-backed teachers’ organisation ‘Bangabandhu-Adarsher Shikkhok Parishad’ protested the ongoing demonstration against the VC.
President of anti-VC teachers’ group ‘Bangabandhur Adarsha O Progotishil Shikkhok Shomaj’ Professor Ajit Kumar Majumder said, ‘We are protesting the irregularities of VC Professor Farzana Islam and her despotic activities on the campus through holding such a symbolic senate meeting.
“Though the assembly was symbolic, the participating senators were real. As the senate is the main policy making collective body and maximum senate members are demanding the VC panel election, so VC Professor Farzana Islam will have to take initiatives to hold VC panel election as soon as possible,” he said.
