Prof. Dr. Himel Barkat (40), a teacher of Bengali department of Jahangir Nagar University (Dhaka), a well-known poet, literature and researcher who died of massive cardiac attack in Dhaka in the early hours of Sunday was buried in his family graveyard in the village Mithakhali under Mongla Upazila in Bagerhat district on Monday morning after holding his 3rd Namaj-e-Janaja in Mithakhali football ground. It was attended by cross section of people including Mongla Upazila Chairman Idris Ali Izaradar, Mongla Porashava Mayor Zulfikar Ali, political leaders, people’s representatives and journalists. On Saturday while he was taking class with his students online he fell ill seriously. He was rushed to Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital where he died of cardiac attack in the early hours (at 4 am) of Sunday. He was taken to his Dhanmodi residence and his first Janaja was held on a local mosque premises on Sunday morning. His second Janaja was held in Jahangir University campus after Zohor Namaj. Then the dead body was taken to his village home at Mithakhali. He left behind widow, one daughter and 2 brothers to mourn his death.
He was the son of late Dr. Wali Ullah, a popular physician of Mongla Port town and brother of late well-known poet Rudra Mohammad Shahidullah. He was one of the prominent researchers of Bengali language and literature. He wrote a number of books.
