The students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Friday called off their siege programme after the university authorities assured them of withdrawing the case filed against 56 students.
The students under the banner of ‘Protibader nam Jahangirnagar’ kept the administrative building of the university under siege since July 31 demanding withdrawal of the case filed against their fellowmen.
JU unit Sangskritik Jote general secretary Nazmul Hossian said the university administration had a
meeting with the agitating students on Thursday afternoon to settle the issue and decided to withdraw the case. “So, we’ve decided to withdraw the siege programme,” he added.
After a three-day hunger strike at the Central Shaheed Minar premises on the campus earlier on July 17, four students of JU withdrew their fast unto death as JU pro-vice Chancellor Prof Amir Hossian had assured them of withdrawing the case.
On May 26 last, the agitating students blocked Dhaka-Aricha highway for six hours following the death of two fellow students in a road accident in Savar while police fired rubber bullets and tear gas shells to disperse them.
Later, the students besieged and the VC’s residence and ransacked it protesting police attack. On May 27, the university administration filed a case against 56 students bringing the allegation of vandalising the VC’s house.
