A faction of teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Monday showed black flags to Vice Chancellor Professor Farzana Islam criticizing for her role in corruption.
Under the banner of “Jahangirnagar Against Corruption”, the demonstrators said that they would show “red card” to the VC today (Tuesday), the last day of their ultimatum issued for the resignation of the VC.
Amid rain, the protesters holding black flags stood in front of the Central Shaheed Minar around 1:00pm, which lasted for nearly 30 minutes.
The protesters on September 18 declared the VC persona non grata during the upcoming admission test of 2019-20 session, which was scheduled to be held between September 22 and October 1.
They also issued an ultimatum till October 1 for the VC’s resignation. The demonstrators will go on strike if the VC does not resign today.
“Along with her resignation, we demand punishment of the VC following probe,” said Professor Mirza Taslima Sultana, teacher of Anthropology Department and one of the protesters.
The VC is not only connected with graft but she also had indulged and supported sexual assaulters many times, the teacher said, adding that Prof Farzana Islam “has lost all kinds of morality”.
The agitated students of JU have been demonstrating on the campus since August 23 demanding the relocation of three male students’ dormitories, which the authorities planned to construct near Rabindranath Hall.
They have also been demanding judicial probe into the allegations of corruption and irregularities that took place before the approval of these mega projects.
The students and teachers also protested against the corruption of the authorities and unplanned development works, which would endanger the biodiversity of the campus.
