New dormitory inaugurated Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said, the aim of education is not only to obtain certificate, we need knowledge and research-based education practicing as our nation is becoming knowledge-less.The Minister termed this in an inauguration programme of largest female dormitory of Jahangirnagar University named after Prime Minster ‘Sheikh Hasina hall’ on Thursday. Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid inaugurated the dormitory as chief guest while Education Secretary Dr Mohammad Sadik, JU Vice Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam, Pro-VC Prof Abul Hossain, Treasurer Prof Abul Khayer and administrative personalities were also present on the occasion.Later a discussion programme was held at Zahir Raihan Auditorium with a lot of participations.”We are a family of Education and I am also a worker of this family, we have to create new knowledge by acquiring knowledge and a university is the place of acquiring vast knowledge” said Minister.Education Secretary Dr Mohammad Sadik said, ‘we are proud of Jahangirnagar University with evergreen natural beauty as here, there are enriched academic and research development as well as infrastructural development.Addressing the function, Vice-Chancellor of the university Prof Dr Farzana Islam said, we are proud of building the dormitory after the name of Father of Nation’s daughter Sheikh Hasina who is a promising country premier. ‘I hope the seat crisis will ease as they finish their studies soon and leave the halls,’ she added.The newly constructed dormitory Sheikh Hasina Hall, with a capacity of 648 seats, will help ease the accommodation crisis suffered by the female students, says hall provost Prof Farid Ahmed.Female students especially who have been sharing seats with others at other dormitories of the university will be preferred in the selection process, he added.Moreover, two female dormitories are under constructed named after ‘Begum Sufia Kamal Hall’ and ‘Banghamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib’ and by the end of the task as early possible accommodation crisis would be ended, he added.  The hall authorities have already started processing enrolment of girl students for the dormitory and female students will stay from June 15.Mentionable, the construction work with the 15 core 30 lakh taka budget of the Sheikh Hasina hall was started during the period of former Vice Chancellor Prof Shariff Enamul Kabir in 2011.JU rag festival To mark the rag festival (Education Ending ceremony) of 37th batch of Jahangirnagar University (JU), the King and Queen were elected on Saturday among the fellows of 37th batch with fanfare, festivity and great enthusiasm.Snehasis Chakraborti Ovi elected as king and Antora Hossen as Queen.Thousands of students from all departments joined in the election and elected king and queen while the convening committee of festival was selected earlier.A total of 506 votes were cast out of 1510 votes, confirmed chief election Kamran Seddiqui. The campus is in festive mood as the splendor festival not only enthralled the students of 37th Batch but also made the whole campus alive.Earlier an election commission was also formed headed by JU Journalist Association (JUJA) president Kamran Seddiqui in order to arrange a free and fair election for electing a king and queen for the festival.JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Farzana Islam visited the JU Central Student Union (JUCSU) center during the election.Three candidates competed for rag-king including Snehasis Chakraborti Ovi of Banghabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman hall, Nakibul Hasan of Mawlana Bhasani hall and Shiran Bin Sarwar Prappo of Mir Mossaraf Hossen hall while two candidates were for Queen post as Tasmia Kabir of Protolota hall and Antora Hossen of Drama and Dramatics department.Ovi bagged highest 193 votes while Prappo and Nakibul bagged 172 and 135 votes respectively. On the other hand, Antara bagged 322 votes and Tasmia bagged 161 votes.  The 5-day Rag festival from June 24 to June 28 includes colorful rally, tree plantation, Mehedi festival, Kite festival, Blood grouping, Bauwl Sondha, grand dinner, concert and gigantic chitchat. —JU Correspondent
