The Faculty of Business Studies of Jahangirnagar University (JU) was established in 2009 with a mission to produce efficient business graduates who will contribute sharply for fostering the economic growth of the country.
Under this faculty, Finance & Banking and Marketing were launched on that year and the following year, Accounting & Information Systems and Management Studies started.
This faculty is now overwhelming with numerous problems including crisis of classrooms, seminar libraries, teachers’ common room, and canteens.
According to the faculty office, around 1500 students are in the four departments under honors and master’s courses and a total of 150 students are being admitted in EMBA Program under this faculty. There are only 32 teachers under the four departments while among the large portion of them are on leave for higher education.
When visited the faculty, The Finance Today found that, each of four departments have only two class room for their 5 batch students which are not sufficient to continue classes together with 5 batches.
Md. Hasnain, a fourth year student of Accounting department said, ‘There are only two class rooms for each department in our faculty which is not sufficient enough for continue class together at a time. Sometimes, teachers were forced to take the class tests and examinations in delay for classroom crises’.
‘Because of the classroom crisis every departments of this faculty are facing session backlog of one year’, he added.
Under this faculty, the Finance and Banking and the Accounting and Information Systems departments are facing session jam exceeding a year. Besides, the Marketing and Management Studies departments also experience session jam of six to eight months.
Students under this faculty, too, said the shortage of classrooms was primarily responsible for their session jam.
Separately from the classroom crisis, the departments under this faculty do not have their own seminar libraries, computer lab and teachers’ common rooms.
When contacted, the dean of the JU’s Business Studies faculty, Associate Professor Nilanjon Kumar Saha, said, “Our faculty is comparatively new. That is why we have some infrastructural glitches. We have regularly urged the university authorities to give us land to develop our infrastructures with our own fund.
JU pro-vice-chancellor (academic) Prof. Abul Hossain said, “The university authorities are concerned about the problems of the Business Studies faculty. We have applied for funding about 1200 cr. to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) to construct a new building for many faculties. It is currently being processed. We will construct a new building for this faculty once we get the resources.”
