Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) observed the 80th birth anniversary of renowned nuclear scientist and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s husband Dr MA Wazed Miah on Wednesday on the university campus in a befitting manner.
On February 16 in 1942, Wazed Miah affectionately called ‘Sudha Miah’ was born in a respectable Muslim family at Laldighi Fatehpur village under Pirganj upazila in Rangpur district.
He breathed his last in Dhaka on May 9 in 2009 and was buried at the family graveyard in his village at Pirganj in Rangpur.
Marking the day, the leaders and activists of the ruling Awami League’s student wing placed wreaths at the mural of Dr MA Wazed Miah, in front of Dr Wazed Miah Science and Research Center on the campus around 12.30 pm, reports BSS.
Later, they arranged a Milad and Doa mahfil at the central mosque of the university after Zohr prayers.
A special munajat was offered there seeking eternal peace for the departed soul of Dr Wazed and well-being of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and their family members.
Addressing the program, JU BCL President Akhtaruzzaman Sohel said internationally renowned nuclear scientist Dr Wazed Miah never exercised power even being very close to the power.
This was one of the major aspects of his life, he said, adding Dr Wazed had a dream of setting up Ruppur nuclear power plant, which is currently under construction.
The talented man worked tirelessly for the development of the country through his researches, Sohel said.
JU BCL General Secretary Habibur Rahman Liton said Dr Wazed Miah was not only a scientist but also played an important role in national politics.
He had always stood beside Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and encouraged her to conduct the political activities.
Over 500 leaders and activists of JU BCL from different dormitories of the university were present at the programme.
