JU BCL factional clash, 3 hurt Asstt Proctor, journalists assaulted

At least three members of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) were injured in a factional clash at Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Tuesday in which an assistant proctor and three journalists were also assaulted.
The incidents ensued when two groups of BCL led by Abdur Rahim Jewel (expelled from BCL) of Mir Mosharaf Hossain Hall and Jewel Rana of AFM Kamal Uddin Hall locked in an altercation over a tender in front of Central Library of JU.
Abdur Rahim Jewel (Journalism and Media Studies, third year) assaulted Jewel Rana (Philosophy, Masters). Jewel Rana took the revenge by walloping Abdur Rahim Jewel, resident of Mir Mosharraf Hossen Hall. One of Abdur Rahim’s relative got the work order of selling some trees uprooted in rainstorms recently on the campus, BCL sources said.
In consequence of the incident, armed with sharp weapons, the BCL workers of MMH Hall launched attack at Kamal Udin Hall and it lasted for about one hour. The senior BCL leaders and the proctorial body brought the situation under control and the BCL workers returned to their dorms.
Meantime, some BCL activists assaulted three working journalists of the University.
BCL activist Arafat Rahman of International Relations Department chased Assistant Proctor Julqar Nine with sharp weapon and assaulted him.  
Journalists alleged that BCL men intentionally committed the offence of assaulting after some journalists and a number of students caught a BCL man with his girl friend red-handed in compromising situation in a lavatory of Zahir Raihan auditorium of JU, and handed them over Proctorial body yesterday noon.
Mamunur Rashid, Secretary of JU Journalists Association, condemned the assault on journalists and demanded punishment to the involved BCL men.
On the other hand, a group of BCL leaders and workers of MMH Hall assembled in front of the Proctorial office and censured the journalists for leaking out the incident. Later, taking an undertaking, proctorial body released them.
BCL President Mahmudur Rahman Joni said, the situation is now under control.
