200 marks slashed: JSC, JDC exams’ marks now 650

The Education Ministry has planned to slash 200 marks from the Junior School Certificate (JSC) and Junior Dhakhil Certificate (JDC) examinations with a view to protecting the students from extra pressure.
The JSC and JDC examinations are being held with 10 subjects of 850 marks. Of them, 100 for English 1st paper and 50 for 2nd paper, 100 for Bangla 1st paper and 50 for 2nd paper, Mathematics, Science, Bangladesh and World Studies, Religious, Home Economics/Agriculture 100 for per subject and Information and Technology 50 marks.
The total marks of the examinations will be 650 after slashing the 200 marks.
Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka sources said, all the board chairmen and examination controllers agreed to reduce 200 marks.
They have taken the decision in a meeting held at the board conference room recently.
The boards also sent a letter with recommendations to the Education Ministry for taking further course of action to implement it.
Dhaka Education Board Chairman Professor Muhammad Ziaul Haque told The New Nation yesterday that a total of 200 marks will be deducted from the JSC and JDC examination.
 “50 marks from English Subject, 50 from Bangla Subject and 100 marks from the optional subject will be cut. There will be no optional subject (4th subject) in the examination from this year,” he said.
 “The new rule will be active from the day the ministry gives nod to the board’s decision,” he said.
The Education Ministry sources said a committee comprising noted educationists, intellectuals was formed in 2016 to work out to adapt the total education system, including examination process.
The committee held a meeting between 25 and 26 November in 2016 in Cox’s Bazar. The members of the committee discussed about the
education system and made several recommendations to build skilled and world standard manpower.
As per the decision of the committee, the chairmen and controllers of all boards decided to slash the marks.
Earlier, the ministry removed three subjects. These were Fine arts, Physical Exercise and Market Oriented education.
The guardians appreciated the initiative of the Education Ministry for decreasing the mental pressure of the students.
