Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry at its 13th meeting on Thursday sent the “The Air Transportation (Montreal Convention) Bill 2020” to the legal wing of the parliament secretariat seeking its advice on it.
The committee also decided to finalize the report on the bill in its next meeting, a parliamentary secretariat press release said. Committee Chairman RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury presided over the meeting, attended by committee members State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Md Mahbub Ali, Tanveer Imam, Sheikh Tanmoy and Sayeda Rubina Akter at Sangsad Bhaban. The Air Transport (Montreal Convention) Bill 2020 was sent to the committee for further scrutiny after it was placed in Parliament in June last to pave the way for an air passenger to get some $160,000 (Tk1.4 crore) as compensation in case of death.
If the bill is transformed into a law, it will also help ensure proper compensation for the injuries of air passengers, damages of baggage or cargo goods in line with the Montreal Convention 1999.
During the meeting, the parliamentary watchdog also recommended providing financial incentives to staff of Bangladesh Parjatan Cooperation (BPC) those are working under daily basis during this Covid-19 pandemic.
Apart from that the committee members discussed on various steps taken by the civil aviation and tourism ministry to tackle the challenges due to the pandemic as well as utilize the allocated budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year.
