JS body for sustainable embankments to check riverbank erosion

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Water Resources on Sunday recommended constructing sustainable embankments and renovation of the old ones to prevent riverbank erosion in the country.
The parliamentary watchdog came up with the recommendation at its 10th meeting held at the Sangsad Bhaban here with its chairman Ramesh Chandra Sen in the chair, an official release said. During the meeting, the committee placed a progress report of a 205-kilometer dredging work in six districts – Barishal, Patuakhali, Bhola, Pirojpur, Barguna and Jhalokati under the Delta Plan. Besides, the committee also placed a progress report on a 117-kilometer embankment repair work project before the meeting.
The meeting suggested completion of the ongoing projects of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) as soon as possible.
Other committee members – State Minister for Water Resources Zaheed Farooque, Deputy Minister for Water Resources AKM Enamul Hoque Shameem, Md Afzal Hossain, Shamshul Haque Chowdhury, Md Nazrul Islam, Md Faridul Haque Khan and Nurunnabi Chowdhury – were present at the meeting.
Water Resources Senior Secretary Kabir Bin Anwar and senior officials of the ministry and the Parliament Secretariat were also present.
